VOLCANOLOGY ACTIVITIES - GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE OF PERU

1. SITUATION REPORT 2005 - 2006

Name: JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ AVALOS

Position: RESEARCH AGGREGATE

Organization: GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE OF PERU (IGP)

YEAR JICA COURSE: VOLCANOLOGY, 1993

The Volcanology Area of the IGP is in charge of the geophysicist-geodetic monitoring of active volcanoes in the south of the country. In the present we works in two volcanoes : Misti and Ubinas. Misti volcano has a seismic network of 5 stations and Ubinas volcano with a network of six seismic stations. Both volcanoes also count on a GPS network. Additionally measurements of gravity and spontaneous potential are made. In my case, study the phenomena of masses inestablity by the volcanic activity: Evaluation of Lahars and debris avalanches. In this year we have worked in avalanches of Solimana and Hualca Hualca volcanoes, and in Coropuna and Hualca Hualca lahars. From the month of March 2006 a volcanic crisis of the Ubinas has begun, in addition to the works of sismology and satellite geodesy, we are making measurements of  EDM aim to determine deformations of the volcanic cone.

2. GOOD PRACTICE

At the present time the volcanic crisis in Ubinas is continuous. The authorities has therefore declared the alert orange. For this reason, by the end of the month of may the evacuation of the Ubinas was determined, to a temporary refuge to 6 km of distance from Ubinas. A total of 3000 people has been evacuated approximately. If continue the activity of the volcano, this seeing the possibility of evacuating definitively to the population to another safe zone, implemented with the basic services. The main problem that affects the population is the ash and gas discharge that has affected agriculture and animals.
